Cam Ymlaen- a user perspective
I have been struggling and fighting for user rights, or should I say care, throughout the Conwy area. After much heart searching I decided to contact Cam Ymlaen for a bit of information technology training. What I discovered was a breath of fresh air in terms of friendliness, sensitivity and understanding.
Although the ultimate aim is to get back into the mainstream of life and work, what struck me was the back up support of individuals. I don't know about all the detailed information but the attitude of the staff I met was remarkable from the directors to the clerical workers. It brings back the humanity into people's lives and a genuine intention to help people who have been through a lot.
I don't think it gets the recognition it deserves and the significance of its contribution may be not be fully appreciated. The service is geared to help many users who have what seem to be insurmountable problems. There must be a great deal of experience and determination to get people to have a better quality of life. I have enjoyed the experience and my self esteem has improved after quite a long period in relative isolation.
The teaching staff are excellent and infinitely patient. I have learnt quite a lot in a relatively short period of time and what is more it was enjoyable.
The funding of its future operations is not secure but I can guarantee that Cam Ymlaen gives inestimable value for money and what cannot be valued is the new hope and faith in many people whose plight would otherwise be ignored.
This initiative is inspired by the common love of humanity and is an example that must be cherished and sustained.
Yours gratefully, B.M.

RRD:
Having had a nervous breakdown and spent four years with depression and unemployment, I had no social contact and did not know what to do. After being referred to Cam Ymlaen, I completed a basic word processing course, started with Cam Ymlaen as a volunteer for two mornings a week and began job searching in earnest. I attended an anxiety management course and work preparation course and both of these helped me greatly. Talking with other people with similar problems was invaluable. I was offered a job by Cam Ymlaen as an admin assistant and have now been working for over a year for 3.5 days a week and am much more positive about my future.

Cam ymlaen have been key to my attempt at return to work after years of trying without any support. I recommend this organisation to anyone who has mental problems or lacks the confidence which create barriers to a return to work. For me the organisation has enabled me to be much stronger and put me in touch with people with similar problems as myself.

I have suffered from depression intermittently since 1973 & this has caused problems in the workplace resulting in having to leave 4 quite different jobs. I have received support from Cam Ymlaen since 2004. This has proved invaluable; I have attended various computer courses including CLAIT, CLAIT PLUS, Internet & Photoshop which have given me the opportunity to meet new people & learn new skills & gain confidence. In 2005 I attended a work preparation course which was very useful. Following this I was assisted by Susan in finding voluntary work in a local Charity Shop, which I still enjoy & find therapeutic & it is very good to know that Cam Ymlaen are there to support me should I have any problems or feel well enough to return to paid employment in the future. We are very fortunate having this service here in North Wales.

After I had a breakdown in 1991 I found it dificult meeting people again, feeling lonely and depressed. Following a period as a cleaner with a mental health agency called Unllais at their training offices I was referred to Cam Ymlaen because the funding for the training office at Unllais had run out. I work 3 hours a week for Cam Ymlaen as a caretaker which as well as giving me some extra money, under the permitted work scheme, also enables me to meet people and I enjoy my work for them as I like to feel I do a good job. I have also attended some college courses with Cam Ymlaen and recently received a distinction in OCN1 Word Processing which I was very pleased about. If Cam Ymlaen didn't receive any more funding to continue the service for service users here in Conwy I would feel upset to see such a good organisation like Cam Ymlaen being forced to shut. When I started with Cam Ymalen I had no confidence and felt worthless; that I was not capable of working - what a mess! Then I got introduced to Cam Ymlaen. I must say that only for them, I could still be sitting at home feeling sorry for myself and letting my family down and a helpless case. I joined a group to do a short course in aromatherapy and gained a unit one certificate, which I have never had in my life. The support I've had understanding not being judged made a world of difference to my way of thinking about myself. Then I was working with Susan Meaden which only for her support and believing in myself as a person I would not be where I am today, working in M&S where I have now worked for 4.5 years. I started voluntary for seven months where I gained confidence made friends and work 16 hours a week. I enjoy my job I also still have the support from M&S and my family are very proud of me for what I have achieved.

I wanted to write and thank the Cam Ymlaen Team for all the help that I have received. After suffering a personal trauma in the workplace, which resulted in severe depression, I was put in touch with Cam Ymlaen who helped me by advice, support and training to improve my self esteem and confidence and return to work. Suffering from mental health problems is not always obvious to others but it is real and debilitating. Thank you again to the Cam Ymlaen Team.

My time with Cam Ymlaen has been amazing, the help and support I received from the Pre-Vocational course through voluntary placements and now I am in self employment. Now I feel better than ever.
